What Is DTF Printing?
DTF printing — short for direct-to-film — is a heat transfer process where artwork is printed onto a PET film, coated with hot-melt adhesive powder, and cured into a ready-to-press transfer. That transfer is then heat pressed onto a garment at roughly 285-305°F for about 7 seconds. Because a white ink underbase is printed behind the color, DTF reproduces full color on cotton, polyester, and blends in any garment color, including black, with no pretreatment and no per-color setup fee.
How DTF Printing Works, Step by Step
Every DTF transfer goes through the same six stages, whether it is one design or a full gang sheet:

Artwork is prepared
The design is sized to its final printed dimensions with a transparent background — normally a 300 DPI PNG. Nothing is mirrored for DTF the way it is for vinyl; the film is printed and pressed face-down as a unit.

Color layer prints onto PET film
A DTF printer lays down CMYK water-based pigment ink onto a sheet or roll of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) transfer film. This is the layer you will actually see on the garment.

A white underbase prints on top
White ink is printed over the color layer — behind it, once flipped. This underbase is what lets DTF show full, accurate color on black and dark garments, where ink alone would disappear into the fabric.

Hot-melt adhesive powder is applied
While the ink is still wet, the film is coated in a fine thermoplastic adhesive powder. The powder sticks only to the printed areas, which is why DTF has no visible carrier box around the design the way some transfer methods do.

The powder is cured
The film passes through a curing oven or under a heat source until the powder melts into a smooth, slightly tacky backing. Cured transfers are shelf-stable — you can order them now and press them weeks later.

You heat press it onto the garment
Press at roughly 285-305°F for about 7 seconds with firm pressure, then peel the film. The adhesive bonds into the fabric fibers and the design becomes part of the garment.
DTF vs Other Printing Methods
The honest version: no method wins everywhere. DTF wins on flexibility and on small-to-mid runs with full-color art. Screen printing still wins on cost at high volume.

The clearest dividing line is setup cost. Screen printing charges per color, per design — a four-color graphic carries four screen setups whether you print 12 shirts or 1,200. DTF has no setup fee at all, so below roughly 50-75 pieces a full-color DTF transfer is almost always cheaper. Above that, screen printing's per-unit cost keeps falling and eventually wins.
What Is a DTF Gang Sheet?
A gang sheetis a single sheet of DTF film with many designs arranged — "ganged" — together to use the space efficiently. Since DTF is priced by area rather than per design, nesting artwork tightly onto one sheet is what actually lowers your cost per print.

What does DTF stand for?
DTF stands for direct-to-film. Artwork is printed onto a PET transfer film rather than directly onto the garment, then heat pressed onto the fabric as a finished transfer.
What is the difference between DTF and DTG printing?
DTG (direct-to-garment) prints ink straight onto the garment, so each shirt must be loaded and printed individually, and dark cotton requires pretreatment. DTF prints onto film first, which means one sheet can carry dozens of designs, transfers store indefinitely before pressing, and the same transfer works on cotton, polyester, and blends without pretreatment.
Do DTF transfers work on dark shirts?
Yes. A white ink underbase is printed behind the color layer, so DTF shows full, accurate color on black and dark garments without any pretreatment step.
What temperature do you press DTF transfers at?
Roughly 285-305°F for about 7 seconds with firm pressure. Use the lower end of that range on polyester and performance fabrics to avoid scorching or dye migration. Always follow the specific instructions supplied with your transfers.
How long do DTF transfers last?
Pressed correctly, DTF prints routinely survive 50+ wash cycles without meaningful cracking or fading. Wash inside out in cold water and avoid high-heat drying and direct ironing on the print to extend that further.
Are DTF transfers stretchy?
Yes, moderately. Cured DTF has some flex and works well on jersey knits and performance wear. It is not as elastic as a discharge screen print, so for extremely high-stretch garments keep designs smaller or split large solid areas.
How much does DTF printing cost?
Gang sheet pricing is by area rather than per shirt. At Dallas DTF House, custom gang sheets start at $1.75 per square foot with no minimums and no setup fees, so a full-color design costs the same per square foot as a single-color one.
Can you press DTF transfers on polyester?
Yes — this is one of DTF's advantages over sublimation and DTG. Press polyester at the lower end of the temperature range with a cover sheet. On brightly dyed polyester, dye migration is still possible, so test one piece before running a full batch.
